Trips across
EAST ASIA

Where stunning landscapes, rich history, diverse cultures and delicious cuisine await!

East Asia, encompassing China, the Korean Peninsula, Taiwan, and Japan, stands out as a fantastic travel region for its rich blend of history, culture and scenic beauty. Ancient traditions harmonize with high-tech modernity, creating a distinctive atmosphere where temples, palaces, and tranquil gardens exist alongside bustling cities. The natural landscapes are diverse and stunning, from mountain chains to remote offshore islands. Each season reveals a unique aspect of this beauty, from spring cherry blossoms to vivid autumn leaves.

We’ve often travelled here just to for the food. The food here is truly remarkable, with each country offering famous dishes and street food that showcase unique flavors. The regions infrastructure makes exploring easy and enjoyable, while the culture and very welcoming hospitality add to its appeal. Festivals and traditional arts provide an immersive experience in local culture, and global pop culture influences like K-pop, anime, and cinema has brought us closer to what’s shaping the world today. All of this makes East Asia a region that offers a unique and endlessly rewarding travel experience.

Location: China, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, South Korea and Japan during 5 months

From the ancient splendor of the Forbidden City and the Great Wall to Inner Mongolia, we have crisscrossed most of China on more than 20 visits. Despite the hackwork that is creating modern China every so often China throws up something that takes us by surprise – like a remote village, friendly small-town people or unique scenery. We are still running a project to visit all individual provinces of China which will be added successively to this site.

Hong Kong, with its superb natural harbor, excellent hiking, plenty of temples and super beaches, is a magnet in the whole region where we have been on several occasions. Mainland Kowloon and Hong Kong island is offset by an entire archipelago of beautiful and sparsely populated islands that are easy to reach. Just an hour away is Macau, the oldest European settlement in the East and an interesting contrast to the bustle of Hong Kong.

Taiwan also remains a land of sharp contrast with megacity Taipei and several high mountain chains, yet the rural coastal road circling around the island and the entire interior part remain amazingly unspoiled. We have been here a couple of times and we’ve done a road trip around the entire island. Especillay the natural scenery it some of the best in the entire region.

South Korea is exotic and dynamic, and the entire peninsula still remains quite off the beaten track. We have traveled during several weeks from Seoul to Busan through provincial and national parks, remote villages and offshore islands, and we believe that South Korea has a lot to offer. From craggy granite formations to waterfalls, remote islands and ancient dynastic temples and cities, South Korea is  a big travel destination and we tend to returen every so often.

In Japan, where we have been on several visits, we look for the traditional way of life, unparalleled cuisine and great natural experiences. Japan might be a country of heavily beaten highways and railways, but it has numerous barely visited backroads and remote regions and islands. Japan remains one of the most interesting travel experiences on the planet with age-old cultural traditions still having their place in contemporary Japan.
